The Big Catch

A solitary fisherman finally catches the biggest fish of his life. But as his boat drifts on, something begins to reveal that his world may not be quite what it seems.

The Big Catch is an original short film I am developing and directing alongside two collaborators, an animator and a character artist, working remotely across different countries. I lead the film's visual development and 3D production, building its world from the ground up, including the environment, props, and ocean. I am also developing its painterly, golden-hour aesthetic through custom shaders and hand-painted textures in Substance Painter.

To maintain consistent lighting and create a seamless transition from day to evening across all 13 shots, I am developing custom Blender tools with the help of AI. These tools allow me to build a flexible and repeatable lighting workflow as production progresses.

Developed a custom interactive lighting tool, using Claude as a coding assistant, to explore and control lighting conditions across shots for an animated short film.

The tool allows for real-time manipulation of key lighting parameters, including light intensity, colour, time-of-day gradients, water bounce, and the transition from daylight into evening. It provides greater flexibility in establishing lighting continuity, exploring different atmospheres, and fine-tuning the visual mood of individual shots.

The project focuses on creating a more intuitive and efficient approach to lighting development, allowing for greater creative control and experimentation throughout the animation process.
